Will Apple allow the Palm Pre to download from and sync with iTunes (ITMS = iTunes Music Store)?
At first, my reaction was, "No way".
After giving it some thought, I can see good reasons for Apple to say yes.
To begin with Apple allows a number of other music players to download and sync music from iTunes.
Palm Pre's should be allowed to download music on the same basis as other manufacturers.
To deny Palm users this ability would seem to be, petty in the eyes of many, and the basis for unwanted negative Apple publicity.
On the other hand, by allowing Pre users to download from iTunes, Apple could be seen as both magnanimous and subtly stating, it has nothing to fear from Palm.
It also reinforces the notion of Apple's user friendliness in both respects.
Pre users may already be Apple customers so why irritate them.
Pre users may not be Apple customers and every visit to iTunes advertises Apple and it's product and services. It's only a few clicks to see all of the iPhone/iPod Touch applications (currently about 40,000 of them and growing); as compared with a modest number of Palm apps.
Some who will buy the Pre are attracted to it because it looks functional in the videos and is the current "newest thing". When that newness wears off, or disappointment sets in, their trips to iTunes may wind up bringing many to Apple products. That's reason enough to put out the early welcome mat.
